some advice please

I went on holiday to Jersey last week.
I am aware that Jersey has a Scout group.
i am interesting in getting in touch with them and asking if they would be interesting for there beavers/cubs to send letters/ emails to my beaver colony.

how would i go about doing this?
does anybody have any tips or advice?
does anybody have contact with a differant group in a differant country- does it work well?

any advice would be very welcome and thankyou in advance for taking the time to read this.

time for an update

sorry for not updating for a while but a lots been happening and life in general got in the way.

first things first:- whats been happening with 2nd Swanwick Beaver Scouts

We have been very busy on the week to week meetings, the lads (we have no girls in the colony) have been busy accomplishing a few badges. they have been steadily working on a challenge badge and completing many activity badges, either on their own or with us as a group.

they recently took part in the annual beaver/cub scout sports day- im sure that they all enjoyed it. I am yet to find out how they did as unfortunately i was away on holiday that week.

i shall find out at the next meeting and shall update shortly afterwards.

Fusion Scout Network.

Network has been busy as usual, we have been bowling, we've played rounders at the local park, played pub quizzes and much more.

There have been several camps that some of fusion have attended.

The one i went to was Spring bank camp at drum hill on the 21st-25th may.

i was on the activitees team and first the first time i was in charge of an activity.

I was in charge of circus skills, it was slightly nerve racking but it went well and fun was had by all, i even learnt to walk on stilts:- see below

unfortunately i wasnt able to attend the other camps due to being away.

while i was away i tried many new things and im hoping to try and incorperate these into networks plannin on the next meeting- surfing was awesome(i can stand up) and go karting was a blast. i was pants at laser clay shooting though- think i might not suggest that one.

Ive also been occasionally helping with 175th derby cub scouts on a tuesday evening. this has been really good to see what they do differantly as leadering technique and because the kids are that little bit older.

it has also helped to keep me busy on some evenings as i have an injury that has unfortunately and annoyingly stopped me doing my usual active things. so i have put my spare time to good use.

it was interesting to watch the 175th derby cub scouts when they were doing fire lighting since its not the first time that they have done it- it took them a good 20mins to notice the rather large pile of dry wood. they much preferd to foridge around the floor near the trees to see what they could find that way.

how everything went

hey everyone,

sorry for not posting anything in a while. things have been slightly hectic.
I shall start with the Beaver Scouts Christmas Carol Concert.
The lads seemed to enjoy this activity-i say seemed because the Beavers have differing views on the activity.

Some of them get really excited and thrive with being the centre of attention and have a really good time blasting out some tunes.
the odd few don't see the point of it and havn't the concentration to stand still for the 15mins of singing they do.

The visit from santa seems to perk them up though-it makes it all worth while for them.
All in all it is quite a nice event and everyone seems to enjoy at least one part fo the evening.

And now i will tell you about the Network County Ball.
The Ball was AMAZING. Everybody was in suits, tux's and really nice dresses.

The Ball was held at pride park in Derby which was really nice.

i got there at 7.30pm met up with everybody, everyone went through to the dining room at 8pm.
The food was really nice and very posh.

it was really good while we were eating because i was able to meet and talk to new people and because of this i have made some new friends.
After dinner everyone made there way back through to the dance floor and danced the night away.

the night came to an end at 1.30am- i was shatterd but had a really good night.

A quick Beaver update.
we asked the beavers at the beginning of the year what kind of badges they would like to do.
the badges that were written down the most were IT skills 1, swimming 1 and the animal friend.
they are doing the IT and swimming badge at swimming lessons and at school and they are doin the animal badge with us every week and at home.

so far so good. We have already had 4 lads complete there swimming badge.

Thats all for now, i shall keep updating

scouty things that are happening in the future

The thing that I am most looking forward to on my scouting calender is the Scout network county ball.
Its the scout networks annual formal party.
I have my outfit ready and I cant wait to boogy. It should be a really good event.
ok so its not till january but I cant wait.

The next thing on the scout calender is the beaver scouts christmas carol concert.
We have been practicing the carols with the beavers and at the minute they need a bit of encouragement so we are hoping that plenty of parents come to the carol service to help out with the singing.

Beaver sleepover

we did our first beaver sleep over the other weekend and it went really well.

The theme for the sleepover was to bring the outside in. mainly because the children arent able to camp outside, so they camped inside and they had the tents up inside and we brought in loads of dried leaves.

We took the lads(we have no girls in our beaver section) for their tea at mcdonalds. we decided to walk them there so that they could burn a bit of energy.

After tea and before bed they had an indoor camp fire with many camp songs.
it wa slights out at 10.30pm, the last child went to sleep at about midnight.

They were up for 7am and had breakfast at 8am. They had cereal and a cooked breakfast.
They were going to eat outside but we had snow during the night and had to change the plans slightly.

we still have all the lost property. For some reason none of the parents want to claim the pants that have been left behind, cant understand why.

The lads have been really positive about the experiance and we are just waiting for the feedback from the parenst to se what they thought of the event and to find out what the lads said tpo them after the experiance. we are hoping that these comments will help us to change and addapt for the next slepover so that it is even better than this one.

Scouting in a Bag

On Saturday 27th September 2008 i attended Scouting in a Bag skills day which was held at Pride Park in Derby.

The reason for the day was to learn new skills which can be taken back to the sections we work in to allow the children to have the opportunity to try new things.

The day was really good as i was able to meet up with old friends who I had met on recent training courses and learn lots of new things.

I think there was about 200 people from scouting at the event and it felt like i knew about half of them and even if i didn't know them, i do now-That's what i like about scouting.

The next big thing i am really looking forward to is Peak 2010.

I know its a little bit soon to start looking forward to it.
At the Scouting in a bag day i was able to meet up with one of the organisers of the activities team for Peak 2010. I now have the form to fill in to apply for funding to do Climbing and abseiling at Peak 2010. I'm really looking forward to this.

Beaver Antics

The new Beavers Scouts that have recently joined the Colony seem to be well settled which is really good as it can be hard for some of the children to leave there parents/carers.

the Beavers have been working on the friendship badge which is going well as it has helped them to get to know the new lads that have started.

We had a really good turn out for the church harvest festival service. The Beaver Scouts all looked really smart in there uniform and even the odd one tried to join in with the singing.

In the next couple of weeks the Beavers will be doing part of the international badge at home and they will also be doing their first aid badge and then it wont be long till we need to start practicing our Christmas carols for our Beaver Scout carol Service.
